49ers Jordan Mason In Line For More Starts

49ers' Jordan Mason: In line for more starts

Mason was impressive in his 3 starts last season

Mason, a sixth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, flashed impressive potential in limited action as a rookie, averaging 5.9 yards per carry on 48 attempts. He also hauled in 15 receptions for 163 yards out of the backfield.

"He's a guy that showed his ability to make some explosive plays," Shanahan said of Mason at the NFL Combine in March.

Mason could benefit from Trey Lance's mobility

Mason's skill set could be a good fit for Lance, who is known for his ability to extend plays with his legs. With Lance at the helm, the 49ers could use Mason as a change-of-pace back who can take advantage of defenses that are focused on Lance's running ability.

Mason is also a solid pass-catcher, which could make him a valuable asset in Lance's offense. In 3 starts last season, Mason caught 2 passes for 32 yards.

Mason faces competition from Mitchell and Wilson

Mason will have to compete with Jeff Wilson Jr. and rookie Tyrion Davis-Price for playing time, but he has the potential to be a key contributor for the 49ers in 2023.

Wilson is a proven veteran who has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of the last 2 seasons. Davis-Price, a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, is a talented runner who could also see significant playing time as a rookie.
