Early Life and Activism
Arvind Kejriwal was born on 16 August 1968 in Hisar, Haryana, India. After graduating from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, he worked as an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer for several years. However, Kejriwal's passion for social justice led him to leave the IRS and join the anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare in 2011.
Chief Minister of Delhi
In 2012, Kejriwal founded the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and contested the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections in 2013. The AAP emerged victorious, and Kejriwal became the Chief Minister of Delhi. He served for 49 days before resigning due to the failure of his government to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill, which aimed to establish an independent anti-corruption ombudsman.
Second Term as Chief Minister
In the 2015 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections, the AAP once again won a majority. Kejriwal was re-elected as Chief Minister and has been serving in this role since February 2015. Under his leadership, the AAP government has implemented several policies focused on education, healthcare, and social welfare.
Activist and Politician
In addition to his role as Chief Minister, Kejriwal has remained active in activism. He has been involved in protests against corruption, environmental issues, and rising fuel prices. Kejriwal's outspoken nature and willingness to challenge the status quo have earned him both supporters and critics.
Controversies and Arrests
Kejriwal's political career has been marked by several controversies. He has been accused of making defamatory statements, holding unauthorized protests, and misusing public funds. In 2013, he was arrested for staging a sit-in protest outside the Prime Minister's residence. Despite these controversies, Kejriwal continues to enjoy a loyal following among many Delhi residents.
